Dylan Kennett retains second at Tour of Ireland after avoiding late stage two crash......
Dylan Kennett hung on to second as the New Zealand endurance track cycling team avoided a late crash and finished safely in the peloton on the second stage of the Tour of Ireland.
Competing in the event as part of preparations towards the Rio Olympic Games, the seven-strong group of Kiwi riders all stayed out of trouble when there was an incident in the main bunch inside the final three kilometres on Monday (Tuesday NZ time).
It meant Kennett not only retained second in the general classification, just six seconds behind Dutchman Taco van der Hoorne, he also held onto the lead in the young rider category.
Two Irish riders broke clear mid-race on the 188km stage to Charleville in County Cork and it was Eion Morton who went on to win in 4:14:15, with the peloton 11 seconds behind.
A number of breaks proved unsuccessful on the tour's longest stage before Morton and countryman Bryan McCrystal broke clear at the 90km mark. They built up a lead of seven minutes before the peloton, driven by the Australian national team, started to eat into the advantage.
After the peloton split, the gap reduced to 2:45 with 20kms remaining, But the Irish pair managed to withstand the chase before Morton sprinted clear to win from McCrystal, who was four seconds back ahead of the peloton led by Denmark's Nicolai Brochner.
Kennett was held up in the late crash, but because it was within the final 3km all riders in the bunch were awarded the same time.
Wednesday's third stage heads out to the south west coast with the 133km stint to Dingle on the shores of the North Atlantic Ocean including two categorised climbs.
